Lesson Title: Letter of the Week Unit (Letter F) Grade: Preschool
Content Area: Language Arts
Lesson Length: 10-15 minutes per day Phase 1
Jenny: I feel that my knowledge of technology is a little less than average. I do have experience with navigating the internet. I do search websites for information/lessons to use at school, and incorporate what I find with the students that I work with. I also have a limited experience with ipods. I do not always have the time or take the time to explore all of the facets of technology. I work in two general education classrooms, where the teachers use the smartbaords on a daily basis. I jump between the two classes to work with my students, so I do not know how to fully navigate the smartboard. I do have experience in powerpoint and excel. I have searched websites to develop lessons for the students to complete. There is much more technology out there that I would like to learn how to utilize, but I need the time to learn. My knowledge of pedagogy continues to evolve as I learn more with experience. I am a Special Education Teacher, so I work with students who have special needs, such as autism, learning disabilities, behavior issues, and attention problems, etc. I feel that I adapt pretty well to the needs of the students in the classroom. I also feel that I learn as behaviors and issues arise through my years of experience. My content knowledge is average, and also continues to increase with my experience. I plan lessons with my co-teachers, so I modify and adapt assignments as needed for the students.
Jodee: I believe my knowledge of technology is average. I am able to use several different types of computer applications. I explore the internet, use it to edit and store photos, and look for educational ideas. In my classroom I use the smartboard with my students to access online games that reinforce the lesson, as well as, some simple lessons that I made to be used on the smartboard. I teach three-five year old children in a low socio-economic community so many times I am simple exposing my students to the computer. I feel that my knowledege of pedagogy is always expanding. I hope that I continue to learn along with my students and that I keep current with changing trends and styles. I believe that I am knowledgeable in my content area, but I also continue to want to learn and grow with the changes. I feel like my weakest link would be the technology area, but hopefully I will be expanding that knowledge. I am unsure about tying these three areas together, but I'm sure that I will learn.
Phase 2
Why should a technology-based method be used? To enhance students learning and keeping up with trends and utilize available resources.
What problem would your team like to address? We want students to be able to recognize and name the letter of the week without getting frustrated with repetitive lessons.
Does a technology-based method offer a solution with sufficient relative advantages? Yes, we believe that hands on opportunities on projects will have long term impact with students and allows a fun way to learn these skills. Visual and interactive activities will also be beneficial. We know that it will be time consuming to prepare the lesson, but it w be well worth it for student learning. Phase 3 - Decide on Objectives and Assessments
What outcomes do we expect from using the new methods? We expect the students to be excited and engaged in the new and different lesson which will effect student behavior, better achievement, and improved attitudes.
What are the best ways of assessing these outcomes? These outcomes will be assessed through observations and end of the unit rubric.
